Cord blood stem cells
In 2017 the companies Czech Gene Bank and Medical Centre of Prague fused and since then all services are secured through the Medical Centre of Prague.
Cord blood is located in the placenta and in the attached umbilical cord of babies and is a unique source of hematopoietic stem cells. These are embryonic cells that form red blood cells, platelets and cells of the immune system. The concentration of these cells drops significantly with increasing age and consequently reduces the regeneration potential of haematopoiesis, including immunity.
Besides hematopoietic stem cells, the cord blood is a source of mesenchymal stem cells, which participate in the regenerative processes of connective tissues, such as cartilages, tendons or muscles.
Hematopoietic stem cells have been used in the treatment of haematological and oncological diseases for more than 60 years. At present more and more studies are appearing which utilize the unique properties of stem cells in regenerative medicine, immunology and infectious medicine.
You can find an overview of several hundred studies on stem cells taken from cord blood on the website www.clinicaltrials.gov.
The Medical Centre of Prague also offers the possibility of only testing the cord blood without the requirement for storage.
